Ok I didn’t want to say anything…However..what was up with the delay in Bustle you may ask?

It turns out Robin Kay’s son didn’t have a seat…So what did they do? They took two people out of their seats about 4 rows back and right in front of where we were standing…(hey it was Bustle…what you want from me…them and Lucian I am willing to stand for).

I couldn’t stop laughing….I mean I can understand 20 minutes before the show..But 30 secs?

Nice….

petition to take down her highness

i just want to touch on this business of this petition circulating around…

the first thing…for the record…
it’s not me or anyone in my crew…it’s not my style (pardon the pun)…I don’t like her…never have after my first meeting with her…and have told it to her face…that’s how I do things…I think she should not be in charge because she is not a good businessperson..period…and anyone who has ever asked me that has had that response….

the funniest thing about this is that while the sentiment is right on…the execution is lacking…while they have a bunch of signatures…90% of them are anonymous..with most of them bitching about how much of an alcoholic and a drug addict she is…only a few of them go on the record saying so…the ones who do…ballsy and well done…

here’s the thing…

be careful what you ask for…

without a mechanism or plan in place on what to do when she is gone, it could actually cause more harm for the designers and the current system in place..it would definitely inflict years of irreparable damage if this was handled poorly and unprofessionally…after having attended some of the shows this week..my opinion has been reaffirmed…we have some of the greatest designers in the world…we have to make sure that their needs are the number one priority.

The issues here are of accountability and leadership..both of these things the FDCC does not have…this is one area of that I am very knowledgeable in having been on various boards of non-profit cultural institutions….there are mechanisms that need to be put into place as there is an arrogance and air of exclusivity that permeates throughout L’Oreal Fashion Week as a result of Ms.Kay.  Maybe it comes from her perception of a lack of competition in the marketplace…this leads to a laziness which leads to the arrogance that we all face now…this arrogance most always leads to misappropriation of funds and a very sloppy corporate structure…and non-profits are more susceptible to this…
maybe not…who knows…at the end of the day…I have got my own thing to do…

people often ask me, do you consider yourself a competitor to Fashion Week…my answer is always no….our mission from day one has always been to bring the various aspects of the Toronto Style industry to the forefont of consumers in this city because Toronto is the city that writes the majority of the rules of global pop culture by the things we create and the way we do things.  Toronto Fashion Week tries to be like New York Fashon Week which in turns tries to be like Paris Fashion Week….no creativitiy, no inspiration, and most importantly no growth – things the fashion industry inherently needs…

The need for creating this movement that is the Toronto Week of Style comes from having grown up in the hip-hop community…the general rule is if someone is telling you can’t…find a way yourself…and do… Toronto Fashion Week said that urban/hip hop design is not considered good enough to be a part of the event…so we decided to do something about it….using the hip-hop philosophy that has defined modern fashion, modern marketing and pop culture, the Toronto Week of Style was created.  Now I am not saying that we are hip-hop event…we are an event that celebrates the Toronto Style community. This is important because the one factor that the powers that are in charge of marketing the city seem to overlook is that we are the most creative city in North America. This creativity has been a major force in defining modern-day pop culture…and this creativity needs to be celebrated…..

I feel for the people who have put this petition together…
this type of dialogue and action is definitely needed as Ms. Kay does not know what she is doing…however, there are politics that need to be addressed and a workable long-term strategic plan put in place before anything should be done….

and this is the last I am going to discuss this……
